The University of North Carolina Charlotte, also known as UNC Charlotte, Charlotte, or, although deprecated, UNCC, is a public, coeducational, doctoral/research university located in Charlotte, which is the county seat of Mecklenburg County and the largest city in the US state of North Carolina, having a population estimated at a number of nearly 687 500 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the 18th largest city in USA.
The university first started as the Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina, being opened in September, 1946, and it was originally founded to provide education for the returning World War II veterans. UNC has grown to become known today as the 4th largest university among the 17 UNC System institutions, being ranked by the U.S. News & World Report as one of the Nation’s Top 10 Up and Coming Universities.
UNC Charlotte offers its students 62 master’s degree programs, 90 baccalaureate (bachelors, undergraduate) programs and 18 doctoral (Ph.D.) programs, its first emphasis being on teaching, followed by engineering, research and responsive public service, 15 of its degree and certificate programs being offered via distance education. The institution is academically organized into 9 colleges, which include: the William States Lee College of Engineering, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Arts + Architecture and the Belk College of Business.
The university’s athletic teams are known as the Charlotte 49ers, which compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, basketball being the most followed sport on campus. The baseball team also contributed to UNC Charlotte’s athletic fame, when, in 2007, posted a school-record of 49 wins, also winning two games over N.C. State in the NCAA Tournament. The university does not have a Division I football team, but it is currently in the process of raising funds in order to support one.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable UNC Charlotte alumni, there are: Clay Aiken - singer, Broadway star, and 1st Runner Up of the second season of American Idol, Calvin Brock - heavyweight boxer, Roger Canaff - nationally recognized Legal Expert, Anti-violence Advocate, and Child-protection Specialist, David Hauser - former Duke Energy CFO, Fairpoint Communications Chairman and CEO, Nicole Atkins - pop singer, just to name a few.
